Inspections to Regularly Carry Out On Your Timber Windows and Doors

Blog

If you are looking to add a touch of traditional class to your home, then timber windows and doors would be a great addition. Although this material was commonly used in years past, more and more homeowners are gravitating toward more modern materials such as stainless steel and aluminium for their windows. Nevertheless, if you invest in timber windows and doors, you also have to ensure that you are taking measures to keep them in pristine condition. The following are some of the inspections that you should regularly carry out on your timber windows and doors.

Inspect the paint on your timber windows and doors

Some homeowners may opt to paint their timber windows and doors so that they blend in with the rest of the exterior theme colours of the home. If you have chosen to paint them, it would be prudent to carry out inspections to check on various things. First, check the paint for any peeling and cracking. Leaving this unchecked will make your timber windows and doors become an eyesore. Whenever the paint stars to peel off, ensure it is scrapped off and the timber repainted anew.

Secondly, inspect the them for signs of decay. Repainting timber when it has started rotting will simply seal the decay within the wood, and this could comprise the structural integrity of your windows and doors. Any rotting timber should be removed and replaced.

Inspect the caulking on your timber windows and doors

Another important aspect of your timber windows and doors is their caulking. Caulking refers to the substance the contractors will apply at the points where the doors and the windows come into contact with the exterior of the structure. This caulking is important as it functions to ensure that drafts do not make their way into your home through gaps between the walls and the windows or doors. The caulking also works to ensure that rainwater and moisture cannot access the interior of timber, which most likely is not sealed.

It is therefore important to regularly inspect the caulking to ensure that it is not deteriorating. If you notice that the caulking has begun cracking over time, it is prudent to enlist the services of a contractor to replace it as soon as possible. Leaving the cracks unchecked poses the risk of moisture making its way into your timber windows and doors and could lead to eventual water damage.
